Qualifications

Education: 
  • Completion of Grade 12, all students must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or within six months of graduation.
Experience:
  • Experience in delivering children's programs is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills
Overall Purpose: In alignment with BPL’s programming strategies, and under the guidance of the Community and Programming Librarian, the Library Aide will focus on facilitating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) programs to children aged 6 to 9 that combine shared reading with hands-on learning through STEAM-based books and activities. In addition, the role will support the library’s Summer Reading Club program by promoting the program in the library and at outreach visits, and by assisting customers navigate the registration and check-in components of the Summer Reading Club.    
Key Accountabilities:
  • Encourage, promote, and assist customers with the registration and check-in processes for Summer Reading Club.
  • Prepare and facilitate STEAM programs for children ages 6-12.
  • Promote STEAM programs and the Summer Reading Club program to caregivers and children in the library and at outreach events.
  • Support library staff by preparing resources for library programs.
  • Complete a summative evaluation of the Library Aide position.
  • Perform additional position-related accountabilities assigned by management.

Work Environment
  • Most work is completed in public library spaces, while customers are present, with little exposure to noise, dirt, or external elements.
  • Some work is completed in office space, moderate level of computer and phone use.
  • Some outreach events are held offsite.
Physical
  • Normal physical activity such as periodic standing, walking, sitting and the use of basic motor skills.
  • Some continuous physical exertion required such as moving, changing, and setting up for programs or community spaces; shelving, shifting, packing and unpacking boxes.
  • Ability to move materials and supplies (up to 50lbs)
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to bend and stretch to reach high and low shelves

  • Perform routine tasks requiring accuracy and attention to detail on a computer

Working Hours
  • BPL is open seven days a week and schedules may include regular evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to drive between library branches
